Mkasanga
Like Yosefe, Mkasanga is a basic school, which means it teaches students for the first nine years of education. The school currently has approximately 380 pupils enrolled with only xx teachers. However, many of the teachers are not qualified, and those who are, have had to be funded by charity projects.
The main challenges facing Mkasanga are primarily construction and equipment based, including:
- Building structures need renovating, with most of the walls starting to crack
- The classrooms are bare, with cracked concrete floors and no desks
- There is no security in the buildings, which means textbooks have to be locked away and pupils do not have access outside of school time
First Sparks’ priority is to carry out the urgent building repairs and make the school secure so textbooks can be made more freely available and displayed in the classroom. Plans are already underway for this and work is expected to commence in early 2008.
